Elizabeth
Erazo Baez is a Latina artist who is known for her ability to capture the cultural
emotional nuances of the Puerto Rican experience. Baez's visually stimulating
art of folklore, tradition and nostalgia are rich in color, texture and emotion.
On her tapestry of possibilities, Baez depicts Latin- centric contemporary art
as well as luminous landscapes, proactive portraits, still lives and vibrant cultural
realities. For example in her painting "La Fiesta Plena" the artist shares the
rich tradition of story telling through song, dance and drumming celebrating the
Afro Latin traditions of Puerto Rico.
Born
in Brooklyn, New York of Puerto Rican parents, Baez celebrates
her bicultural perspective as a NewYorican who had the fortunate
opportunity to grow up both in New York City and in Bayamon, Puerto
Rico. According to Baez, "I wasn't born in Puerto Rico. Puerto
Rico was born in me." Her distinctive bicultural perspective collides
vibrantly on her palette with great detail. In her technique she
captures the soul of each painting by weaving brush strokes into
feelings of hope, pride and sometimes despair. "Art calls at me.
It calls for me to express and to evoke passion." "It is my connection
with God, which is why it must be shared, says Baez.
Baez
has an Associate in Arts and Sciences for Art and Advertising
Design from New York City Tech College.
Currently
living in Miami, Florida Baez is both a wife and a mother of two
young children. Inspired by her own family, Baez decided to formally
introduce her artwork to the public in 2000 in Coral Gables. Since
her debut Baez's work has been displayed throughout United States
and Puerto Rico.
Representing
Puerto Rico in 2005-2007 for Miami-Dade County, Hispanic Affairs
Advisory Board's Hispanic Art Expressions. Since 2005 to present
has served as curator and participating artist for Broward College's
annual Hispanic Heritage Art Exhibition. In 2008 she has served
as a cultural representative of Puerto Rico during Hispanic Heritage
Month at the juried exhibition First Annual Hispanic Heritage
Expo/ Celebrando Nuestro Arte Y Cultura Hispana Group Exhibition
at the Miami Beach Convention Center; participated in the Hispanic
Heritage exhibit of Jan and Gary Dario Gallery Palm Beach Community
College; Melbourne Art & Science Museum. In 2008 she has served
as volunteer curator and as participating artist organizing a
fundraiser for ASPIRA of South Florida, Inc. in Wynwood Art District.
In 2007-2009 she has served as committee member, curator and participating
artist, organizing a fundraiser for for the Silver Angels Fund
for indigent cancer patients of Women's Cancer Association (WCA).
Through
her art, Baez is also a community change agent committed service
and the cultural preservation and advancement of Puerto Rican
art globally.
Israel
Pabón, President of PROCER Organization, says, "Elizabeth's art
awakes in me the most tender and nostalgic remembrances of my
childhood in the mountains of Puerto Rico: the people; the folklore;
our traditions... Is like seeing everything again, like the feelings
emanates from her paintings and find their way through my eyes
into my heart." Baez shares her memories from the heart, that
is why the viewer can see their own family in her paintings. Both
painter and patron are speaking to one another from heart to heart.
