Who is Miguel?

This is photo of Miguel Irizarry graduating with honors before his illness took over his life and he became bedridden.

Miguel Irizarry is a teenage Puerto Rican artist with a
life-threatening illness. He is a gifted and beautiful human being and we would like to make sure that he receives the medical care that he needs to be able to lead a healthy and normal life. Miguelito needs your help.

Miguel suffers from OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) and many other physiological disorders. He has had 4 surgical procedures in the last 2 years, some of them to place tubes to his digestive system so he does not starve to death. This has been his only means of nourishment for over two years.

Miguel arrived with this mother in Miami during the first week of April 2003, after his doctors in Puerto Rico told his mother that the medical care he could receive in Miami was his only hope. Faced with losing her son, Miguel's mother did what any mother would do, leave the few things she had and bring her son to Miami.

Carmen Díaz-Hernández, Miguel's mother, is a woman of very humble means and Miguel's only family and support here. Expensive drugs and medical treatment have placed her in severe financial hardship. As they are poor, she can no longer face the financial challenges brought about by her son's illness.

Despite Miguel's trying condition, he graduated with honors from High School in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. He paints marvelously when his illness permits. He loves art, music, and has a passion for history. He has mentioned he wanted to learn German and Chinese when he gets better.
